Note Memorization
Introduction
Hey Rockstars! Ready to expand your fretboard knowledge? Today, we're diving deeper into enharmonics, covering every string up to the 12th fret. Let's rock this!
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
Identify and name all the notes up to the 12th fret on the low E string, using sharps when ascending and flats when descending.
Apply the same naming technique to the A string and all other strings.
Play the "D-mented" riff on the D string, recognizing the use of enharmonics.
Enharmonics on the Low E String:
Using the diagram below, start from the open E and move up to the 12th fret, naming each note as a sharp. On your way back down, name them as flats.
Enharmonics on the A String:
Now, let's tackle the A string. Just like with the E string, move up naming sharps and move down naming flats.
Across All Strings: Change this to a new riff
Repeat the same process for the D, G, B, and high E strings. Always remember the exceptions between B-C and E-F. They're here to keep you on your toes!
Interactive Challenge: The "D-mented" Riff
Alright, Rockstars, it's time to put those notes to use! Dive into the riff called "D-mented", which is played exclusively on the D string. As you play, take note of the 1st fret on the D string. That, my friends, is an enharmonic. Depending on the direction or key you're in, it can be called D# or Eb.
Once you've got a feel for the riff, it's time to jam! Play along with the backing track and let the music flow. Remember, the more you practice the better it gets, as long as you practice correctly that is! So don't be shy with repeating it until you nail it!
Practice Routine:
Spend a few naming notes on the E string up to the 12th fret and back.
Repeat the process for the A string.
Challenge yourself: Name both the sharps and flats on all strings.
Randomly pick a note up to the 12th fret and determine if it's a natural note or an enharmonic, and name it.
Learn and practice the "D-mented" riff. Once comfortable, jam along with the backing track.
