Natural Notes on the Fretboard

50% Complete

Introduction

Hey there! Ready to unlock the secrets of your guitar's neck? Understanding where all the natural notes are is like having a roadmap for your musical journey. So, let's hit the road!

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
Identify natural notes on all six strings up to the 12th fret, both ascending and descending.
Understand the concept of octaves and how they relate to each string.
Apply the knowledge of natural notes to simple melodies and riffs.
Recognize the two half-step points on each string.

The Octave Concept:
An octave is when you start from one note and play up to the same note 12 frets higher. Understanding octaves helps you navigate the fretboard more efficiently.

If we count through our notes in the musical alphabet until we reach the same note again, we will have played what is known as an octave.

Natural Notes on Each String:

We're going to break down each string and identify the natural notes from the open string up to the 12th fret, and then back down. This is where your octaves complete a full cycle.

Say It Out Loud:
As you play each note, make sure to say its name out loud. This will reinforce your memory and help you know exactly where you are on the neck.

Remember the phrase "Big Cats Eat Fast"? The first letters of each word is B-C and E-F, which are the notes that are only a half-step apart. Keep these in mind as you navigate through each string.

Interactive Challenge:
Grab your axe and try to play all the natural notes on each string, starting from the open string and going up to the 12th fret. Then, make your way back down. Can you do it without any hiccups?

Quiz Time:
1. What is an octave?
2. How many natural notes are there on each string up to the 12th fret?
3. What are the two half-step points on each string?

Practice Routine:
Spend a few minutes identifying natural notes on the E and A strings, going up and back down.
Move on to the D and G strings, again going up and back down.
Finish up with the B and high E strings, ascending and descending.
