Rhythmic Studies
Introduction
What's up, Rockstars! Ever tapped your foot to the beat of a song? That's the time signature at work. It's the heartbeat of music, and today we're diving into the basics: 4/4 and 3/4 time. Let's get into it!
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
1. Understand what a time signature is and its importance in music.
2. Differentiate between 4/4 and 3/4 time signatures.
3. Count beats in each measure according to the time signature.
4. Play a 4/4 chord progression and a 3/4 time Weezer riff.
What is a Time Signature?
A time signature tells you how many beats are in each measure and what kind of note gets one beat. For now, we're focusing on the top number, which tells you the number of beats per measure.
While we're not diving deep into the bottom number in this lesson, if you're really curious, that bottom "4" indicates that each beat will receive a quarter note. It's another layer of the time signature puzzle that we'll explore in future lessons.
4/4 Time:
The most common time signature you'll encounter is 4/4. This means there are 4 beats in a measure, and you'll count it like this: 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4.
3/4 Time:
Another popular time signature is 3/4. Here, you have 3 beats in a measure, counted as: 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3.
Interactive Challenge: MAKE CHANGES HERE
Grab your guitar and play a simple chord progression in 4/4 time. Then switch it up and try the same in 3/4 time. Feel the difference?
Bonus Challenge: My Name is Jonas by Weezer
Want to see a real-world example of 3/4 time? Try playing the riff from "My Name is Jonas" by Weezer. This riff is a great way to get a feel for 3/4 time. As you play, count "1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3..." to help you stay in time.
When you're ready, jam along with the backing track to really nail the feel of 3/4 time.
Quiz Time:
1. What does the top number in a time signature represent?
2. How would you count beats in a 4/4 time signature?
3. How would you count beats in a 3/4 time signature?
Practice Routine:
1. Spend time jamming in 4/4 time.
2. Switch to 3/4 time and jam a little more.
3. Work on a 3/4 time by playing the Weezer riff.
4. Record yourself to see if you're staying in time.
